Susan Travis (nee Woodgate) is a major character in the story Charlotte and also plays a minor role in Stuart
Early life[]
Susan was born in 1962, the oldest daughter of Eric and Joan Woodgate. She has two younger sisters named Sally (b 1965) and Sonia (b 1969). In the mid 1980s, she fell in love with and married a man named Mark Travis, with whom she would have one child, a boy named James. Susan struggled when it came to parenting, not bonding with her child to any extent and leaving disciplinary matters to her husband. In 2008, at the age of sixteen, James was cautioned by the police for being in possession of marijuana, something Susan's husband found intolerable. James was ejected from the family home, and Susan wouldn't have any contact with him for another three and a half years.
When a Son Becomes a Daughter[]
At Christmas time in 2011, Mark received a phone call from a psychiatric doctor named Beverly Phillips, who explained that she was James's counsellor and that he wished to reconcile with his parents. Unbeknownst to Mark and his wife, however, James had been transitioning for the past nine months, and was now a woman named Jamie-Lee Burke.
